SHORT FILMS
EARLY WORK
TDF Films began in 2000 as ‘TDF Productions’, an outlet for making amateur college films - some experimental (‘Hank’, a college short made in 2001 was sent to Channel 4’s ‘The Shooting Gallery’ and was subsequently shown in the ‘Film UK’ section of the 2001 Edinburgh International Film Festival); some just for fun (the ‘Fist’ trilogy, a series of spoof college films, were fully-scripted action pastiches that involved a cast of over 40, a two year shoot and a running time of 90 minutes!)
‘The Doughnut’, a 1 minute film in poetry about the life and death struggle between one man and his doughnut, was recently selected as one of MySpace’s six ‘featured videos’, where it has since attracted an audience of thousands. Another early short, ‘Time’, and ‘Dick Dobson P.I.’ were also subsequently selected for this by MySpace. Both ‘Time’ and ‘The Doughnut were also broadcast on the Sky television channel ‘Trouble’.
As well as corporate and freelance work, TDF Films has a history of making acclaimed quirky, comic short films. These have been selected and acclaimed at numerous festivals around the globe, from Raindance in London, to New York, Venice and Australia.
“THE DOUGHNUT”
“TIME”
THIS IS NOT MY BEAUTIFUL HOUSE
(DVC Pro, 10’48)
‘A blackly comic tale of the unexpected, as one man’s dream flat turns into his nightmare.’
Produced through Bournemouth University, this comedy drama was again made for a very low budget of £140. It was recently broadcast on the television show ‘Shortcutters’ (Sumo TV, Sky Channel 146), where it was named as having the best Production Design of the series, as well as shown on the Sky channel ‘Trouble’.
A MAN CALLED J
(DVC Pro, 8’15)
‘A man decides to end his suffering via the medium of fried chicken.’
Produced through Bournemouth University, this blackly comic short drama tells the story of ‘Eye’, a nihilistic, directionless man, trapped in a flat with The Man Called J, a morbidly slovenly character who relentlessly consumes fried chicken whilst wearing nothing but a pair of crusted Y-fronts. Deciding that The Man Called J represents everything that he fears himself becoming, Eye forms a plan to rid his life of him forever...
Made in 2005, this film was officially selected for the 8th International Mestre (Venice) Film Festival.
DICK DOBSON P.I. AND THE CASE OF THE
KIDNAPPED COOKIES
(DVC Pro, 4’15)
‘Considering retirement at age nine and a half,
veteran detective Dick Dobson agrees to take on
one last case when a mysterious dame stumbles
through his doorway...’
Produced through Bournemouth University, and providing some of the inspiration for TDF’s subsequent ‘Lush Town’ advertising campaign for Lush cosmetics, this film noir pastiche stars entirely children and was made for a total budget of just £120. Made in 2006, the film was selected and screened at several international film festivals, including:
